Welcome to Reading Works

“When I began to read, I began to exist.”  – Walter Dean Myers

Reading Works is dedicated to raising the level of literacy for adults across the metropolitan Detroit region.  This mission is based on the knowledge that reading at a minimum proficiency is necessary for achieving the sustainable work and life skills that will transform the future of individuals, their families and our region.

Denise Ilitch Invite
Join us on September 17th for a reception to launch a fascinating book about key Michigan Difference-Makers, “What They Were Thinking” by Bill Haney. This very special evening is hosted by Denise Ilitch at her new Birmingham restaurant, 220 Merrill with proceeds supporting Reading Works.   The event is free, but reservations are required.  Click on the invitation for more information about the event.  To order limited numbered first editions of the book for $40 each, click on the DONATE button and add the note “book purchase” in the special instructions section.

Thanks to the generosity and the creative team at Skidmore Studio, Reading Works has a new look! The gear reflects the rich manufacturing history of our region as well as the “gearing up” our learners do as they prepare for success through reading. The globe reflects both the broad diversity of our region and our learners’ potential. The book pays homage to our original logo while suggesting wings that will lift up our learners, their families and our region.

Reading Works is grateful to Tim Smith and Skidmore Studio for this beautiful, very special gift that will be the symbol of the Reading Works mission for a very long time.
